We’ve been blown away at NewStarts by the generosity of our local community in helping us provide emergency food parcels and furniture donations for some of the most disadvantaged households in North Worcestershire and South West Birmingham. Schools, churches, local businesses and individuals all continue to play their part, but…

A year ago today NewStarts made one of the most difficult decisions in its history, whether to stay open for the foodbank or whether to close and wait. As many of you know NewStarts usually gets 70% of its income from sales of household items and computers, with this gone…
It’s been a month since my last update on NewStarts. As many of you know, we raise 70% of our own expenditure each year through our enterprise (sale of second-hand household goods & I.T. hardware / I.T. trouble shooting) and with lockdown taking hold, much of this source of funding disappeared overnight. …
The past couple of months have been very strange for all of us. The streets have been quieter, events we are used to attending have all stopped. When the restrictions were announced on Monday 23rd March, my first thought was how could NewStarts support it’s community, my second was, could…
We have some amazing news. Finally we have managed to get some of our stock along with our computers online. So, if you are missing us and our amazing bargains why not browse the shop. All items are available for collection. Our computers are also available for delivery. So, get…
I don’t know about you, but I absolutely hate being hungry. But imagine if that is your daily life. Imagine if, for you, there is a daily decision as to whether to eat yourself or feed your children, or eat yourself or put the heating on. Whilst it seems difficult…
We recently helped a homeless man who came into our shop in New Frankley. It emerged he'd been sleeping under a bridge and he was soaked from the rain so we gave him; a coffee and lunch, a thick, warm coat and hat he could keep and bus fare so he could go to Newtown housing option centre to find lodgings.
It's why our team never fail to impress, again and again with their commitment to go the extra mile to help other people. It's why NewStarts is so much more than a shop/furniture re-use project.
NewStarts is a community hub which people go to because they know we will help them and they are safe with us. Sometimes, they are looking for a bargain, other times, they most want some human contact and warmth.
To help us deliver our wider work around furniture, food, computers and volunteers, please support us https://newstarts.org.uk/donate/

Last week, we helped a man in his mid 20s who had custody of his 5 year-old daughter and having left a hostel, was living in an unfurnished flat. In organising the property, he’d missed a universal credit appointment and had been sanctioned. He had no money and he and…
Last month, we helped a man who had been reduced to living in a tent on a farm due to financial crisis. He came to us for an emergency food parcel, but once we understood his situation, we also gave him a flask of coffee, extra blankets and ensured that…
